Washington Island is a peaceful escape just off the northern tip of Door County, Wisconsin. If you’re a frequent Door County visitor or staying for a full week, making the trip to Washington Island is a great way to explore somewhere new. But if it’s your first visit to the area or you’re only up for a long weekend, it may not make the cut.

For families, it can also depend on the age of your kids — younger children might not find as much to do, but older kids and teens can appreciate the unique sights and slower pace.

How to Get to Washington Island

The adventure starts with the Washington Island Ferry from Northport Pier. The 30-minute ride across the strait known as Death’s Door is part of the fun, offering scenic views and a breezy break from the car. You can take the ferry as a walk-on passenger or bring your vehicle or bikes for easier exploring once you arrive.

Top Things to Do on Washington Island

Schoolhouse Beach

One of only a few beaches in the world made up entirely of smooth limestone rocks — no sand here. The water is crystal-clear and perfect for a dip or skipping stones. Just remember: the rocks are protected, so don’t take any home. In summer, a floating swim raft is anchored just offshore — perfect for older kids and teens to swim out and jump into the clear waters.

Stavkirke (Stave Church)

This hand-built replica of a traditional Norwegian church sits quietly in the woods and offers a peaceful, spiritual stop. It’s a reminder of the island’s Scandinavian heritage and a favorite for photographers.
The craftsmanship is impressive, and stepping inside offers a quiet, almost reverent break from the day’s adventures. Don’t miss the short wooded trail that leads up to it — and best of all, it’s free to visit.

Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm

In bloom during mid-to-late July, this lavender farm is both beautiful and fragrant. The grounds are great for strolling, and the boutique offers lavender-infused gifts, lotions, and more.
It’s a popular spot for photos — especially when the rows of purple flowers are in full bloom. Grab a lavender lemonade and soak in the peaceful, aromatic atmosphere.

Bike Rentals and Riding

Washington Island is ideal for biking thanks to low traffic and open roads. You can bring your own or rent bikes on the island to explore at your own pace. Whether you stick to the main roads or take detours to hidden coves and quiet beaches, biking is one of the best ways to experience the laid-back vibe of the island.

Mountain Tower

Perched at the highest point on Washington Island, Mountain Park Lookout Tower offers panoramic views that stretch as far as Rock Island and the mainland on clear days. After a short uphill walk and a climb up the sturdy wooden structure, you’re rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the island’s forests, farms, and surrounding waters. It’s a favorite stop for photographers, nature lovers, and anyone looking to take in the island’s beauty from above. Don’t forget your camera—and your breath, as the climb is short but steep!

Jackson Harbor Soup

Located at the very end of the island looking toward Rock Island, Jackson Harbor Soup offers soups, sandwiches, and fresh fare with unbeatable views. A favorite stop for lunch before or after a Rock Island excursion.
After your meal, take a short walk along the nearby dock to see antique fishing boats — a quiet, scenic spot perfect for photos or just soaking in the island’s maritime past.

Albatross Drive-In

The throwback Albatross Drive-In is a favorite for burgers, fries, and shakes. Casual, fast, and great for families.
Order at the window, grab a picnic table, and enjoy a classic Wisconsin summer experience. It’s one of those places where the simplicity makes it special.

Bitters at Nelsen’s Pub

One of the island’s quirkiest traditions: take a shot of Angostura bitters at this historic bar to join the “Bitters Club.” It’s weird, fun, and very Washington Island. With its wood-paneled walls and old-timey charm, it feels like stepping back in time. The bar has been around since 1899 and is still going strong.

Hidden Gem: The Washington Island Airport

If you’re into aviation — or just enjoy something different — stop by the island’s small grass-runway airport. Two runways, both turf, give the area a throwback vibe. On fly-in weekends, you can watch planes land and take off just feet away. For two weeks each year, the Madison Skydive Club operates here, and it’s fun to sit and watch skydivers float down over the island.  Their is a Fly-In Fish Boil on June 19th with music, hay rides, hot dogs and ice cream also available. Arrive by plane, bike, car or on foot .
