Wisconsin is known for its picturesque landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant cities. But did you know that it’s also home to a unique natural wonder? Located just outside of Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, Cave of the Mounds is a geological marvel that has been attracting visitors for over 80 years. Here’s everything you need to know about exploring this natural wonder on your next family vacation in Wisconsin.

History of the Cave

The Cave of the Mounds was discovered in 1939 when workers were quarrying for limestone. As they were blasting, they uncovered a small opening that led to a vast underground chamber. The cave was named after nearby Blue Mounds Wisconsin State Park and quickly became a popular destination for tourists from all over the world.

Exploring the Cave

The Cave of the Mounds is a unique geological formation that’s over a million years old. The cave features an incredible array of stalactites, stalagmites, and other formations that have been created over thousands of years. As you explore the cave, you’ll be able to marvel at the natural beauty that surrounds you.

The guided tours of the cave are led by knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides who will help you learn more about the history and geology of the cave. The tours typically last around an hour and take you through the various chambers of the cave. Along the way, you’ll learn about the different formations and how they were created, as well as the various geological processes that shaped the cave over millions of years.

The tour path is paved, but there are a few tight spaces that might challenge those who get claustrophobic. They do offer an alternate route through the tightest space so all can enjoy the natural beauty. On our tour, our guide offered to turn out the lights for a moment so we could experience complete darkness. Our family really enjoyed this experience. You could not see your hand directly in front of your face. Other than the complete darkness experience, the tour route is well-lit.

Other Attractions

In addition to the cave itself, there are plenty of other attractions to enjoy at the Cave of the Mounds. The Discovery Center is a great place to learn more about the geology of the area, with interactive exhibits that teach you about the formation of the cave and the surrounding landscape. You can also enjoy hiking trails, picnic areas, and a butterfly garden.

Tips for Visiting

If you’re planning a visit to the Cave of the Mounds, there are a few things to keep in mind. It’s a good idea to book your tour in advance to avoid long wait times. Also make sure to wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers, as the temperature in the cave can be cool even in the summer months. We visited in the winter and the 50 degree temperature in the tunnel felt nice compared to the freezing weather outside of the cave.

Overall, a visit to the Cave of the Mounds is a must-do on any family vacation to Wisconsin. Whether you’re interested
