Tucked into the rolling hills of Wisconsin’s Driftless Region, Justin Trails Resort is one of those rare places that feels like home the second you arrive. Except, of course, it comes with llamas, disc golf, and a wide-open sky full of possibilities.

We visited this Sparta, WI gem on a summer weekend escape and were amazed at how it seamlessly blends outdoor adventure, cozy comfort, and off-the-beaten-path charm. If you’re searching for cabins and resorts in Wisconsin that offer both character and connection to nature, Justin Trails checks all the boxes. Whether you’re hiking through wildflower-covered hills, tossing a disc on a championship course, or sipping coffee on the porch of a log cabin, this place delivers that slow-down-and-stay-awhile kind of magic.

Let’s walk through why this should be your next Wisconsin getaway.

Dog-Friendly Resort with a Variety of Stay Options

Finding dog-friendly accommodations can sometimes mean sacrificing comfort or style. At Justin Trails Resort, you don’t have to compromise. Whether you’re bringing your pup or not, every space is designed to be both welcoming and thoughtfully appointed.

Lodging options range from rustic to refined, including:

  • Cozy log cabins with fireplaces
  • Spacious farmhouse suites with whirlpool tubs
  • Private cottages ideal for couples or small families
  • A converted chicken coop for a quirky, unforgettable stay
  • Drive-in tent sites for those who love camping with a twist

On our visit, we stayed in The Cottage, which was warm, peaceful, and perfect for a quiet weekend. It features a king-size adjustable bed, bunk beds, a whirlpool tub, a small kitchenette, and an electric fireplace. It’s a space that feels like a retreat but still offers the little conveniences that make a getaway easy and relaxing.

Each morning begins with a beautiful homemade breakfast served in the farmhouse. It’s the kind of thoughtful, unhurried start to the day that reminds you you’re on Driftless time now; and that’s exactly where you want to be.

Two of Wisconsin’s Best Disc Golf Courses

Even if you’re new to disc golf, the two 18-hole courses at Justin Trails are worth checking out. These are not backyard setups; they’re stunning, well-maintained, and offer a wide range of play for all skill levels.

  • The Classic Course is a scenic 1.5-mile loop that’s great for beginners and families
  • Big Brother is a more challenging 3.5-mile course with elevation changes and breathtaking views

Guests can borrow discs, and the staff is happy to give a quick tutorial if you’re new to the game. Best part? Overnight guests play for free, so you can take as many rounds as you like.

Meet the Llamas: Porter and Stout

Two of the most beloved residents at Justin Trails Resort are Porter and Stout, the friendly llamas who spend their days in a cozy pen near the barn. Guests are welcome to stop by, watch them, and enjoy their quirky personalities at any time during their stay.

If you’re looking for something extra memorable, be sure to ask about booking a llama trek. These guided walks take you and one of the llamas out on the trails for a one-of-a-kind hiking experience. Walking through the Driftless hills with a llama by your side is peaceful, fun, and surprisingly relaxing.

Explore 14 Miles of Private Hiking Trails

With 200 acres of Driftless Region landscape at your feet, the hiking at Justin Trails is something special. The property offers 14 miles of private trails, winding through woodlands, open meadows, and quiet farm fields.

We spent the better part of a day just meandering. The trails are well marked, ranging from flat and easy to hilly and more challenging. If you visit in fall, the foliage turns every trail into a photo op.

In winter, those same paths are open for snowshoeing.

Perfect Place to Stay Before or After the Elroy-Sparta Ride

If you’re planning to bike the Elroy-Sparta Trail, Justin Trails makes a great home base. It’s located just a short drive from the trailhead, making it an ideal spot to relax before or after the ride.

Whether you’re doing the full route or just a section through the iconic train tunnels, you’ll be grateful for a comfy bed, a hot shower, and maybe a soak in the whirlpool afterward.

Sparta is Charming and Full of Unexpected Fun

Sparta is one of those towns that quietly wins you over. On Saturday morning, we wandered through the Sparta Farmers Market, which was packed with fresh produce, homemade jams, local crafts, and just the right amount of small-town charm.

We also visited the FAST Fiberglass Mold Graveyard, an outdoor collection of towering fiberglass sculptures that’s quirky, a little surreal, and a total photo op. Where else can you pose with a gorilla, a dinosaur, and a giant pink elephant in the same five minutes?

Another must-see is The Wooden Bridges of Sparta, which add both beauty and character to the town. They’re perfect for a scenic walk or bike ride, especially if you’re already exploring the local trail system.

For dinner, we opted for a local favorite, Club Oasis Supper Club, where we enjoyed a classic Wisconsin supper club experience.

Final Thoughts on Justin Trails Resort

Justin Trails Resort isn’t just a place to stay. It’s a full-on Driftless Region experience with a little bit of everything. You’ve got dog-friendly cabins, rolling hiking trails, disc golf, llamas, and easy access to one of the most iconic bike trails in Wisconsin. It’s the kind of place that works for couples, families, solo travelers, and groups alike.

If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway that still leaves room for adventure, add this one to your list.

WeWisconsin Tip:

Ask ahead about the llama trek when you book your stay. It’s not always listed online but is one of the most memorable parts of the visit. While you’re there, stop by the farmhouse and ask to hear a song from the player piano. It’s a charming little throwback that adds to the warm, nostalgic vibe of the resort. And if you’re headed there in October, the fall colors along the trails are nothing short of spectacular.
