If you’re looking for a fall family adventure that’s easy to get to and fun for all ages, Harvest Fest at East Troy Railroad Museum is a great option. Located within easy reach of Chicago, Madison, and Milwaukee, this vintage train experience is one of those small-town gems that delivers big on fall charm without feeling too crowded or overproduced.

We made the trip on a crisp October morning, arriving just in time to poke around the East Troy Railroad Museum before boarding. The museum itself is worth a few extra minutes. There’s a small but well-kept collection of historic electric rail cars, local artifacts, and model train displays. Kids will be intrigued by the retro controls and old-school ticket booths. Adults might just find themselves drifting into a bit of train nostalgia.

Once it was time to board, we climbed into one of the beautifully restored electric railcars that date back decades. The vintage wood paneling, creaky floors, and clackety sound of the wheels brought instant charm. The train chugged slowly from the East Troy Depot toward The Elegant Farmer, giving us plenty of time to take in the fall colors outside the window. Rows of trees in gold, red, and orange lined the route. For me, that peaceful ride was the highlight. No traffic, no rush. Just a relaxing, slow-motion journey through Wisconsin’s autumn landscape.

At the other end of the line, the Elegant Farmer has all the fall activities you’d expect. Apple picking, pumpkins, hayrides, a corn maze, and of course, plenty of warm cider and fresh pie. You can spend as much or as little time there as you like before hopping on a return train. And yes, you can bring your pumpkin or apple haul right back on the train with you.

The whole outing is easy to manage with young kids, grandparents, or anyone who just wants a mellow day out. Tickets are affordable, the schedule is flexible on weekends, and the volunteers running the show are genuinely kind and knowledgeable.

We’ll be adding this one to our fall traditions. If you love historical rail cars, check out the historic Kenosha Streetcars where vintage trolleys still roll along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

WeWisconsin Tip:

Catch an earlier train out of East Troy if you can. It gives you more flexibility to enjoy The Elegant Farmer and lets you beat the afternoon crowds. Plus, those morning rides through the fog-tipped trees feel extra magical.
